🦠 How to Catch Chickenpox

Chickenpox is highly contagious and spreads through direct contact with infected individuals. The varicella-zoster virus (VZV) primarily spreads via respiratory droplets when someone coughs or sneezes, and through contact with fluid from chickenpox blisters.

Close proximity to infected persons increases transmission risk. Sharing personal items like clothing, towels, or bedding can facilitate spread. Touching contaminated surfaces and then touching your face or mouth can also lead to infection.

The virus is most contagious 1-2 days before the rash appears until all blisters have crusted over (typically 5-10 days). After exposure, symptoms usually develop within 10-21 days.

Prevention: Maintain good hygiene, wash hands regularly, avoid close contact with infected individuals, and ensure vaccination.

While anyone can contract chickenpox, certain groups face higher risk:

Individuals who haven't had chickenpox or received the varicella vaccine
Infants, young children, and adolescents with developing immune systems
Pregnant women who haven't had chickenpox or been vaccinated (risk to mother and unborn child)
Immunocompromised individuals (chemotherapy patients, HIV/AIDS patients)
Adults who haven't had chickenpox (typically experience more severe symptoms)
Healthcare workers in close contact with infected patients

Rash: Red, itchy rash starting as small bumps, progressing to fluid-filled blisters, then crusting over
Fever: Low-grade fever (101-102°F / 38.3-38.9°C)
Fatigue: General tiredness and malaise
Headache: Often accompanying fever
Loss of appetite: Temporary decrease in appetite
Sore throat: Discomfort while swallowing
Muscle and joint pain: Mild to moderate aches
Nausea: May include vomiting in some cases
Red spots and blisters: Appearing on face, scalp, chest, back, and other body parts
