🦠 What is Pneumococcal Disease?

Pneumococcal disease is caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus). This bacteria can cause various serious infections including:

  • Pneumonia (lung infection)
  • Meningitis (brain infection)
  • Sinusitis (sinus infection)
  • Otitis media (ear infection)
  • Bacteremia (bloodstream infection)

⚕️ High-Risk Populations

Young Children: Children under age 2 are at increased risk of pneumococcal infections, including pneumonia and meningitis.

Older Adults: Adults 65+ are more susceptible to severe pneumococcal infections. Aging weakens the immune system.

Weakened Immune Systems: People with HIV/AIDS, cancer, organ transplants, or autoimmune diseases have higher risk.

Chronic Conditions: Heart disease, lung disease (COPD), diabetes, kidney/liver disease increase susceptibility.

Smokers: Smoking damages the respiratory system and weakens immunity, increasing infection risk.

Crowded Settings: College dorms, military barracks, long-term care facilities increase exposure risk.
